Legal changes that affect foreigners

These 3 changes concern enforcement, property ownership and documents from abroad. Each entry links to its source and explains the topic it affects; the dates are not promises about how quickly an individual matter can be completed.

  2. Real estate ownership by non-Saudis

A new law on real estate ownership by non-Saudi people and companies started to apply on this date. The Real Estate General Authority (REGA), the government body that regulates real estate, explains how it works on its official website.

  3. The Apostille Convention: public documents from other countries

The Apostille Convention entered into force for Saudi Arabia on 7 December 2022, according to the HCCH status table. An apostille is a certificate used to authenticate a public document for use abroad. Some documents need an apostille; others need legalisation through official stamps. The route depends on the country of origin and the receiving organisation. Check what the recipient accepts before paying for certification.

What we help with

Our services cover 7 legal areas: 4 for companies and investors and 3 for individuals and families. Item 08 is a guide to choosing and checking a lawyer, not an additional practice area. Start with the topic closest to your situation, then discuss the appropriate scope with the firm.

Companies & investors

01

Company formation

Setting up a company raises 3 practical questions: which structure suits the business, what registration filings are needed and what can be done from abroad. Saudi Law acts as counsel and coordinates licensed partners for the filings. The appropriate route depends on the proposed activity; the scope of legal work and fee are agreed in writing.

04

Disputes with distributors, commercial agents, contractors and suppliers

This service covers disputes in 4 commercial relationships: distributors, agents, contractors and suppliers. Saudi Law reviews the agreement and the events behind the dispute, whether it concerns ending a relationship or payment for completed work. Tell us who the other party is and what you want to resolve before agreeing the legal work.

Individuals & families

05

Foreigners with a court case, an arrest or a travel ban

Saudi Law helps foreign clients facing 3 situations: a court case, an arrest or a travel ban. The route depends on what has happened and where the person is now. Family members abroad can contact the firm to explain the situation and discuss legal representation. For an immediate problem, use the urgent-help contact options.

06

Handling a matter from abroad usually requires attention to 2 practical arrangements: authority for the lawyer to act and documents acceptable to the receiving organisation. Saudi Law discusses both before the work is agreed. A power of attorney may allow representation while you remain abroad; any step requiring attendance is considered for the particular matter.

07

Real estate ownership by foreigners

Before paying for a property, discuss 3 checks with the lawyer: the property itself, the seller’s authority and the proposed contract. Saudi Law advises foreign buyers and owners on the legal work their transaction needs. Any arrangements for a buyer outside the Kingdom are discussed individually; a proposed purchase does not itself establish eligibility to own.

How we work with you, step by step

  1. 01
Office towers seen from the road on a clear day.

    Send us a few lines

Contact Saudi Law through 3 channels: WhatsApp, phone or email. Your first message should identify you and the other party, explain what happened and when, and say where you are now. These 4 points help us understand the matter. We then tell you whether we can help and what we need next.

  2. 02
A tall tower beside the coast, with a lagoon and the sea below.

Agree on the work and the fee in writing

A written proposal should answer 2 questions: what legal work is included and what fee is proposed. Saudi Law first considers whether it can help with the matter and what information is needed. If the matter is accepted, the proposal gives you a basis for agreeing the work before signing the engagement letter.

  3. 03

    Sign the engagement letter

An engagement letter records 2 key terms agreed with Saudi Law: the scope of work and the fee. It is the written agreement between the client and the firm. The lawyer–client relationship begins when the letter is signed. Work starts after signature, within the agreed scope.

  4. 04
A metro train on a raised track at sunset, with towers behind.

    We do the work

We handle the agreed legal work in Saudi Arabia and keep you informed as your matter progresses. Many steps can be handled online or by phone while you remain abroad. Whether a step needs your presence, or an appointed representative, depends on the matter and the agreed work.

  5. 05
The financial district lit up at night.

Updates until your matter is finished

A useful progress update answers 3 questions: what has been done, where the matter stands and what happens next. Saudi Law keeps you informed while carrying out the agreed work. Follow-up continues until that work is finished; the engagement letter defines the scope of the work undertaken.

What to put in your first message

Your first message should cover 4 points: who you are, the other party, what happened and when, and where you are now. Use any of our 3 contact channels: WhatsApp, phone or email. These details help us understand your matter and tell you whether we can help.

  1. Who you are
A person or a company, and your country. If you are writing for someone else, such as a family member, say who they are.
  2. The other party
The person or company your problem is with, if there is one.
  3. What happened and when
A few lines, with the main dates.
  4. Where you are now
In Saudi Arabia or abroad, and in which country.

Working with us from abroad

Working with Saudi Law from abroad involves 5 practical topics: a power of attorney, documents, court hearings, time differences and fees. The points below explain what to consider before agreeing the work. Whether you need to attend in person depends on the matter and the step involved.

  • Power of attorney

For a power of attorney, check 2 points: who is authorised to act and which actions the document allows. A power of attorney lets a lawyer deal with the specified matter in your name. When signing abroad, discuss the wording and the receiving organisation’s requirements before completing the necessary certification.

How to sign a power of attorney from abroad
  • Documents

Documents from abroad may need 1 of 2 authentication routes before use in Saudi Arabia: an apostille or legalisation. The appropriate route depends on the issuing country, the document and the organisation receiving it. Ask that organisation what it accepts before paying for stamps or arranging a translation. Authentication and translation serve different purposes; a certified copy alone may not meet the recipient’s requirements.

Apostille or legalisation: documents from abroad
  • Court hearings

For a court hearing, clarify 2 practical questions: whether it can take place remotely and who must attend. Many Saudi hearings are electronic, including by video, but some steps may require the client or an authorised representative in person. Saudi Law considers attendance requirements for the particular matter when agreeing the work.

  • Time difference

Saudi Arabia is 3 hours ahead of UTC (the world’s standard time) all year round. The clocks do not change in summer. The clock at the top of this page shows the time in Saudi Arabia and your own time.

  • Fees

Before instructing Saudi Law, agree 2 points in writing: the work included and the fee for that work. These terms are recorded in the engagement letter. Discuss the proposed scope through WhatsApp, phone or email. Payment is made directly to the firm, not through this website; no standard price is quoted here.

Frequently asked questions

Who runs this website?

Saudi Law is operated by RAED ALI ALJOHANI COMPANY FOR Lawyership and Legal Consultations, a Saudi firm holding Ministry of Justice licence 4471. Saudi Law is the website brand, not a separate law firm. Our Company details page gives the registered identity, licence, company registration and official contact channels.

Can you act for me without me travelling to Saudi Arabia?

Usually, yes. Start with 2 practical questions: who can act for you and which documents the receiving organisation needs. A power of attorney can authorise the lawyer to act in your name. Many court hearings are electronic. Any step requiring you or an appointed representative to attend is considered when the work is agreed.

Which languages do you work in?

Saudi Law works in 2 languages: Arabic and English. Court work is conducted in Arabic, and the official Arabic text of a Saudi law prevails over a translation. The website’s other language editions help explain the services; they do not mean the firm can conduct your matter in each of those languages. Confirm the working language when you contact us.

How are fees agreed?

Fees are agreed in writing before work begins. The proposal covers 2 points: the legal work included and the fee for that work. Once agreed, these terms are recorded in the engagement letter. You pay the firm directly, not through this website. Our guide on how legal fees work in Saudi Arabia explains common charging arrangements.

Can you guarantee the outcome?

No. Saudi professional rules don’t allow lawyers to promise results they don’t control, and we wouldn’t. We will tell you plainly what can be done, what it involves and what the written terms are. Then you can decide whether you want us to start.

Start with one message

Use 1 of Saudi Law’s 3 contact channels: WhatsApp, phone or email. Explain the matter and where you are now. We tell you whether we can help and what information is needed next. If the matter is accepted, a written proposal sets out the work and fee before the engagement is signed.
